Wearable fashion items are unwearable

I’ve been contemplating the idea of wearable fashion items for a while now.

When it comes to socks, there’s not much in the way of technological innovation happening but maybe there should be.

Then today I came across an interesting article that easily voiced my thoughts on the concept of wearable technology becoming fashion. It hasn’t and it won’t for a while.

Here’s a quick video from FastCompany:

In principle the idea of wearable technology that is fashionable makes sense. But the fundamental problem is the diversity of the available options. Every piece of tech requires it’s own app. Every app requires a new password and tells you somewhat similar information or something completely different. So if you want to know how many steps you’e taken today, one app. How much energy you’re expending, a different app. How much you sweat, app number 3. An app that tells you how many UV rays you’ve had today, app number 4. And so on.

It’s unmanageable and unrealistic for the consumer. We’re never going to do it.

I want something that is slick and fits with my style but that does as much as possible for me with a single app.

Is that too much to ask?
